During the Buddhist period thousands of caves were carved into the cliffs at Bamiyan. The blackened ceilings are a result of people moving here following the destruction of Bamiyan by the Taliban. Since 2004 the caves and grottoes on the cliff face have been abandoned and are now being restored by archaeologists.
